Teaching Sight-Reading

Before a child is ready to read music including pitch changes while actually playing their instrument, they must understand two fundamental things. 1. How to change pitch on their instrument using steps, skips and jumps, and 2. How to identify steps, skips and jumps on music (away from the instrument at first).

In this video Kate Conway demonstrates two games to help prepare violinists for sight-reading changes in pitch. The book used is the wonderful I Can Read Music by Joanne Martin, volume 1.

Suzuki Hub is offering lots of online CPD during the pandemic (and afterwards we hope). To be informed of events coming up please subscribe to our special CPD mailing list here. If you’re looking for tickets to the presentation on sight-reading with Kate Conway, please click here.
